How the Pomodoro Technique works
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a timer to break work into focused intervals, traditionally 25 minutes, separated by short breaks.
- Choose a task you want to work on.
- Start the timer and focus on that task for one full Pomodoro session.
- When the timer rings, mark one session completed and take a short break (5 minutes).
- After every 4 sessions, take a longer break (15–30 minutes).
- Repeat. Reset after a long break.
Why it works
- Reduces distraction — committing to 25 minutes of focus makes it easier to ignore interruptions.
- Prevents burnout — regular short breaks keep your mind fresh.
- Builds momentum — completing sessions gives a sense of progress.
- Improves time awareness — you learn to estimate how many sessions tasks actually take.
Tips for better sessions
- Adjust focus duration to what works for you — some people prefer 50/10 splits.
- Keep a notepad nearby for distracting thoughts you want to handle after the session.
- If you finish a task before the timer rings, use the remaining time for review or planning.
- Track how many sessions a recurring task takes — it helps with future estimates.
Customizing your timer
You can change the focus and break durations at any time. The timer adjusts when you start the next session. Long break frequency controls how many focus sessions you complete before a longer rest.
