What is Morse code?

Morse code is a method of encoding letters, numbers and punctuation as sequences of short and long signals — dots (·) and dashes (−). Invented in the 1830s for telegraphy, it remains the classic way to communicate when voice or text channels are unavailable: amateur radio operators, pilots and sailors still use it, and it is the origin of the universal distress call SOS (... --- ...).

How the translator works

Type any text and you get its Morse equivalent letter by letter, with words separated by a / — the standard written convention. Switch to Morse → Text to go the other way: paste dots and dashes (letters separated by spaces) and read the decoded message. Every conversion happens in your browser, so your messages never leave your device.

Timing rules (why it sounds the way it does)

Morse is measured in time units. A dot is 1 unit and a dash is 3 units. Within a letter, elements are separated by 1 unit; between letters in the same word there are 3 units; and between words there are 7 units. The translator's audio follows the international ITU-R M.1677-1 standard, so what you hear is what a radio operator would send. Use the speed slider (5–40 WPM) to slow it down while you learn or speed it up when you are already fluent.
