How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Paste the video's URL into the box above and click "Get Thumbnails". The tool reads the video ID from any link format and shows every thumbnail size YouTube generates for that video,. Download the file directly or copy the image URL to use elsewhere.
Can you legally use a downloaded YouTube thumbnail?
Thumbnails are copyrighted by their creators, so treat what you download as personal and reference use: saving your own thumbnails, studying a design you admire, or including a small preview image when you write about or embed that specific video. Do not upload someone else's thumbnail as your own video image, sell it, or reuse it in your own promotional material without permission.
Worked example: grabbing an HD thumbnail for a blog post
Say you are writing a review of a video whose URL is youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ. Paste it in, and the tool builds the CDN URL img.youtube.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.jpg โ the 1280ร720 HD image. Download it, drop it into your blog post beside the embedded player, and credit the channel. If the HD version shows a grey placeholder image, that video has no maxres thumbnail โ fall back to the 480ร360 high-quality version and scale it no larger than its native size.
Why is my thumbnail blurry or missing?
Each quality level exists only if YouTube generated it. Older or low-resolution uploads often lack the maxresdefault (HD) and sddefault (standard) sizes; when a size is missing, YouTube serves a grey 120ร90 placeholder. If HD looks blurry, the source simply was never HD โ pick the highest level that renders a real image, and avoid upscaling beyond native resolution.
What are all the thumbnail sizes?
Five levels: maxresdefault at 1280ร720, sddefault at 640ร480, hqdefault at 480ร360, mqdefault at 320ร180, and default at 120ร90. The table above lists each with its typical use โ HD for covers and social cards, SD for article embeds, the small ones for lists and previews.
Do I need software or an extension to do this?
No. Thumbnails are served from a public CDN at predictable URLs, so a browser tool like this one is enough โ no extension, no download, no account.
